I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that I’m a bit of a Scrooge.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland- an unexpected delight, this was MASSIVE!!! And I only found out by this awesome person- thanks heaps!

Admittedly, if you were to ask certain people lately they would disagree as I have given them some thoughtful gifts, but on a whole I’m not a fan of Christmas time.

Or any organised holiday time for that matter- I’m looking at you Valentine’s Day!

Personally, I think it’s just commercialised all to bugger and that any genuine feelings individuals may have are simply caught up in the Hallmark exercise of giving and receiving gifs- hell the fact that I just used Hallmark as a simile shows how commercial it has if that’s what society equates things to!

HOWEVER!

If we take away all the commercial bullshit what does that leave us?

It leaves us in a position that the fundamental nature of humans is to be giving and caring- or at least it is to me. I’ve given some gifts to some awesome people and I’m not going to lie, it does feed to my nature that I like to be kind and generous and thoughtful of others- even when I myself am hurting or not my true self.

Could it be the serotonin hit?

Quite possibly and frankly I don’t think that’s a bad thing. After all, with the last two years being generously described as “difficult”, is it really that bad if we find things that bring us joy and pleasure?

I don’t think so- after all I care about people and for those I do, I do so deeply. Ironically, it’s these same people that I have “discussions” with over being kind- I expect nothing in return from them despite them trying to return the act. Crazy I know but that’s who I am- I will always put others first without any need of recompense.

So, without any real point to make, I would like to share some good things that I am really liking at the moment- or just general positive things.

  1. The kindness of people still can surprise me. I have this person who I think I’ll class as a friend now. Anyway, this person never was a douche- don’t get me wrong- but getting to know them as a person makes me appreciate their awesomeness all that much more. People say toxic masculinity is rampant- no doubt it is!- but this friendship that’s cultivated shows to me that relationships between people- well non sexual relationships I should clarify- are a beautiful thing and we should celebrate them whenever we can.

  2. A good friend and their wife had a beautiful baby boy. I’ve never been one for babies or kids in general, but whenever this friend spams me (willingly I will say!!) with pictures of their little “bug”, I can’t help but smile and admire that despite the world being semi shite, the everyday goes on. How can you not admire a beautiful and growing family that’s full of nothing but love and admiration for each other?

Ok, OK that was only two points, but I think they are very strong points. Anyway, I’m going to post some pictures from a few years back of “Christmas” related things from my trip to the UK.

One of the Carnaby St Lights- that year it was the lyrics to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody! Rock on!

Covent Garden Christmas tree

Points if you know the story behind this!

Oxford Street lights while partaking part of Bustronome London- an unexpected experience, but as it was on my last night there it was a wonderful way to end the trip

If I could skate, I would have went here- the Natural History Museum ice rink!

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland- the Ice Hut!

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland- the Ice Hut and alcoholic beverages!

God’s own Country- when you’ve been there you really understand this expression as it’s VERY accurate.

Can you guess what’s inside the mug?

So I’m writing this at 06:10 in the morning on the what to work on a train where I’m the only one in the carriage (at least so far).

What amazes me is still how beautiful the world is, despite all the doom and gloom.

Admittedly I am in a built up area but whag doesn’t change is the fact that watching the sun slowly ride is such a simple, but beautiful and amazing thing.

It’s also such an apt description and viewing of the way and world we currently find ourselves in- I’ve often said to people at work lately that’s it’s the darkest just before the sun rises, but concurrently when the sun then rises it’s such an awesome inspiring and amazing picture.

The transition from dark to light (or should that be lite?) is breath taking- I’ve seen it in places such as London, Athens, various peers of Greece and also Scotland but the transition is still such a beautiful thing if you can enjoy it.

Picture this- it’s been a mostly cold evening, the darkness still containing the hint of cold and possible a hint of dew hiding from you, when very and sometimes painfully slowly, the dark starts to fade.

In its place is the opening hues of that burnt orange- not as orange as a fizzy drink, but the soft and romantic orange they signals the beginning of a new day no matter where in the world you are.

And as the orange hues start to fade and transition into the blue of a (hopefully) magnificent day, that’s when you realise that today WILL be a magnificent day- no matter the pandemic and your own problems and issues- because when you’ve taken the time out to enjoy the transition from night to day you realise it’s all about transitions- transitions to happiness, joy and beauty.

So it’s Friday morning and yet again I find myself hanging out for today’s latest Covid figures for Melbourne/Victoria.

Yesterdays came in around the usual time and no surprise brought a new level of doom and gloom with the figures being a new Victorian record of just under 1,500- which is also dangerously close to the Australian record.

It’s like a never ending game of doom and gloom- on the way hand I try my best to avoid the news and hearing the figures because it’s all too depressing and feel like it’s never going to get better, but on the other hand because the numbers are so damn stubbornly high there’s no escaping it as someone will no doubt mention it to you at some point in the freaking day!

So what do you do?

Well I try to read more books on my Kindle- after all at least in a fantasy world you can escape the pain and suffering from this never ending Covid crap!

It’ll be nice to see if people started suffering consequences as a result of their action but 17 months into this crappy situation that’s not likely. After all his Covid restrictions ever been truly enforced? It’s all lip service in my mind; nothing more and nothing less

So despite all the gloom and doom and the never ending lockdowns that are pretty much making up 98% of any Melbournians lives, I think it’s also safe to say that good times are around the corner; or I like to be optimistic and think so.

While good times are on the  way to come; I would like to take this chance to post about one of the all time awesome places I’ve travelled to over the years- that is the National Railway Museum, in York in the United Kingdom.

To give some context, I was always aware of this place and during the “big holiday” in August/September 2015 [which was a guided tour of the UK followed by Greece], there was an opportunity to briefly view the museum- and by briefly I really mean less than an hour!

However, that hour was more than enough to know that I was going to enjoy it and so just over three years later, after undertaking a career course direction, I was back in the UK and on my way to York for a wonderful day trip- I departed early via LNER from Kings Cross and returned semi late via LNER and their excellent first class service.

So here’s a photographic trip down memory lane

Boarding screen at London King’s Cross- little did I know that this would be a semi regular train I would catch on my adventures

Awaiting departure back to London and I managed to see this by surprise- the replacement for the Class 225, this is an unbranded class 800 undergoing testing at York Station.

I can’t recall what this was but this was included as part of the First Class fare and it was yummy- a proper first class service unlike on V/Line and other Australian train providers- you got food and drinks!
