So, another show I am currently enjoying- and by enjoying I really mean binge watching- is the 1972 show M*A*S*H.
Yes, yes I am literally well behind the time with this show, but in the ten or so episodes I have watched from the start (yes, I am starting from season one, episode one!), it is a very witty and enlightening show.
As I am watching it in 2022, I am watching it with the benefits of time and hindsight and easy access to the internet to research whatever details catch my eye. So, I am reading this show somewhat differently then if I was watching it contemporaneously. Having said that, the Vietnam War was still ongoing so I can imagine that people could have read into it whatever they so wish.
What got me surprised in these first eleven episodes is how fast they were quick to call out racist. In one episode, there was a use of a word that is very racist but yet still used to this day. The fact that for a show that is set in 1951 (at least season 1 anyway), where segregation was still a thing in the United States, was quick to call out the use of a racist and derogatory term was very interesting. Then again, if we were to flip this idea on its head, the show is in 1972 so just after the age of the 1960s “flower power” movement, so the idea maybe is not so strange perhaps.
I am looking forward to seeing where this show goes not going to lie.
